This past month has been a blur and filled with really awesome opportunities including being a guest speaker at Liberty University!! An old professor asked me if I would be interested in being a speaking to his advanced photography class and photography club about wedding photography!! Um yes!!
I felt SO incredibly honored and I realized this was going to be my first real speaking engagement on wedding photography EVER! I wanted to use this opportunity to share my knowledge and experience while also encouraging and inspiring these eager students. I also wanted to use this experience as stepping stone to see if photography education, like a workshop, was something I’d be interested in doing in the near future.
Beginning a photography business isn’t easy but when the passion is there, you enjoy the journey. I began my presentation by giving a little background about myself and how I got into photography, specifically weddings. It’s funny to think where I was in my photography journey 9 years ago and where I am now. 9 years ago, I was the girl who liked to take photos but had no idea how to work the camera, didn’t know editing was a thing, and had zero knowledge about business. Today, I’m running a full time photography business, have multiple people reaching out asking if they can second shoot or assist weddings with me, and others asking if I will ever do a workshop. After this experience, the answer is definitely yes!
Since photography is 90% business and 10% photography, I wanted to share in my experience how that statistic is 100% true and what all that entails. During the presentation I spoke about two things: before the wedding and after the wedding. A lot goes into wedding photography before the wedding, even before you even have a client booked. After the presentation, so many great questions were asked. I’m glad everyone was so engaged throughout the presentation and a few students even stayed after Q&A to chat with me!
Giving this presentation gave me the encouragement I needed to dream big, to start offering workshops and mentoring. I believe if your dreams don’t scare the crap out of you, you’re not aiming high enough. So thankful for this opportunity! Live fearlessly.
