Prepping for a Family Session // How to Have a Stress-free Experience

Family photo sessions are such a beautiful way to document this season of life—but let’s be real, getting everyone ready and out the door can feel like a lot. With a little planning and the right mindset, your session can be both smooth and meaningful.

In this blog, How to Prepare for a Family Photo Session, I’m sharing my tried-and-true tips to help you confidently prepare for your own family session. While I can’t promise every child will smile on cue or that your partner will love taking photos, these insights will help minimize stress and maximize the chances of a successful, enjoyable shoot. Whether you’re a first-time parent or a seasoned pro, this blog post is packed with practical advice I’ve learned through real-life experience as a photographer and as a mom of four (including three kids two and under!)

1. Prepare in Advance

The moment your family photo session is booked, it’s time to start planning—especially when it comes to outfits. For me, this is always the most challenging part. I’m naturally indecisive, and with toddlers who have strong opinions about what they will and won’t wear, it quickly becomes a juggling act between looking polished and keeping everyone comfortable.

Start planning at least a month in advance so you have time to order alternate sizes or backup options if needed. I always recommend choosing mom’s outfit first—this is usually the anchor for the rest of the family. Pick something you feel confident and beautiful in, then coordinate everyone else around it with complementary colors and textures.

Also, think practically. Make sure your clothing fits well and feels good when you move—that means no slipping sleeves, visible bra straps, or anything that feels too revealing when you’re moving, squatting, or holding a child. You don’t want to spend your entire session adjusting your clothes. If you’re comfortable and at ease, it’ll show in the photos—and that sets the tone for the whole family.

2. Prioritize Comfort for Everyone

Comfort plays a huge role in how smoothly your session goes. If a toddler is hungry, tired, or uncomfortable in their outfit, it’s going to be tough to capture joyful, relaxed images. Help set your family up for success by thinking through their physical comfort ahead of time.

Make sure everyone has eaten before arriving and that naps and rest time are scheduled accordingly. Bring along snacks and water in the car, just in case. Choose outfits that are not only stylish but also easy to move in and not itchy or restrictive—especially for children.

Pro tip: When selecting outfits, think in layers. That cute sweater or blazer may be perfect if it’s chilly, but if it’s warmer than expected, it’s great to have a layer that can be removed without compromising the overall look. This way, your children stay comfortable and happy no matter what the weather throws your way.

3.Give Yourself Extra Time

Running late is super stressful—and stress shows up in photos. Aim to arrive at least 15 minutes early so you have time to change little ones – if needed, walk to the session location, and take a breath before we start.

If you have toddlers or babies, consider changing them into their outfits upon arrival to avoid any unexpected messes—think spit-up, snack stains, or diaper accidents. And speaking of snacks, make sure everyone has eaten beforehand to avoid hunger-induced meltdowns. A calm, well-fed crew is far more likely to enjoy the experience and smile naturally.

4. Set Realistic Expectations

Here’s the truth: real life is a little messy, and that’s okay! Someone might cry, get distracted, or decide they’re so over it five minutes in. Try to let go of the pressure for perfection and embrace the chaos with a sense of humor.

Some of the most meaningful photos come from the in-between moments—snuggles, giggles, and the way your child naturally reaches for your hand. That’s the magic. Prepare your family by keeping expectations low-pressure and fun. And if there’s a treat or special activity planned afterward (like ice cream!), even better!

Family Photo Session Prep Checklist

1. Outfit Planning

  • Choose outfits at least 4 weeks ahead (this way if something doesn’t fit right you have time to order something else)
  • Coordinate colors—neutral tones and subtle patterns work beautifully
  • Avoid logos, text, or loud prints
  • Have everyone try on outfits (including shoes and accessories!)
  • Lay everything out in one place for easy organization
  • 1 week before: iron or steam any wrinkled pieces
  • 1 day before: paint nails or get them done if you plan to

2. Kid-Specific Prep

  • Stick to regular naps and meals (a well-rested kid is a happy kid!)
  • Pack a backup outfit for each child
  • Bring comfort items (snacks, water, favorite toy or blanket)
  • Talk about the session in a positive way—make it sound fun!

3. Day-Of Essentials

  • Leave extra time to get ready so no one feels rushed.
  • Arrive to your session early!!
  • Bring baby wipes, tissues, and a hairbrush for quick touch-ups
  • Keep a light, calm tone—your mood sets the tone for everyone else

4. Husband/Partner Prep

  • Explain what to expect ahead of time
  • Remind them the goal is natural, connected moments—not stiff poses
  • Keep things light and relaxed—humor helps!

5. Mindset Tips

  • Let go of perfection—aim for connection and candid moments
  • Trust your photographer to guide you
  • Remember: these moments are about more than just pretty pictures. They’re about capturing your real family, just as you are right now.

Preparing for a family photo session—especially with little ones—takes effort, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. With thoughtful planning, realistic expectations, and a focus on connection over perfection, your session can be a fun, memorable experience that results in images you’ll treasure for years. These tips have helped my own family time and again, and I hope they help yours, too!
