In 2017, all the brides and grooms that booked me as their wedding photographer lived in other states but were getting married in Virginia. Crazy right? Couples drove from Texas, Tennessee, Ohio, etc. to Virginia for their engagement session. One couple even flew me to Minnesota to photograph their engagement photos!! Why? Because I was able to talk to my couples about the importance of engagement sessions.

In two of my wedding collections, I include a complimentary engagement session. Most of the time brides are excited to have an engagement session included in their wedding collection because she can have professional photos of her and her fiancé instead of selfies and she can start on her save the dates! Other times brides don’t want or feel like they need engagement photos. This is when I love explaining why engagement sessions are more than just a few photos of you and your fiancé.

Here are a few reasons why engagement sessions are so important!

1. Building a Friendship and Connection

By the time you have booked me as your wedding photographer, we will have already started building a friendship. I love connecting to each and every couple by getting to know them and knowing what’s truly important to them. Couples are not just another wedding or engagement session but friends that I get to share their story with and capture their memories.

Engagement sessions are another way to build this friendship and connection! I love getting to see how my couples interact with each other and watching the chemistry between them. It’s a great way for me to get to know them more as well as give them a chance get to know me and see how I work.

2. Comfortable in Front of the Camera

One concern I hear from almost every engaged couple is they aren’t super comfortable in front of the camera and they want help with posing. Couples book me because they know I’ll give them guidance and direction during their engagement session.

In every session, I go over 4 core poses which give variation to each image. This gives those dreamy, romantic portraits that we all love! It’s also a great time to see what you love and what you don’t. By the end of your session, you’ll feel like a pro! You’ll know which poses were your favorite, what poses you are most comfortable in, and which poses just weren’t your favorite. An engagement session also give me the opportunity to see and ask if you are super affectionate, reserved, or love the snuggles. This information is so helpful for the wedding day!

3. Be a Pro on your Wedding Day

Now that you’ve had your engagement session and you’re familiar with posing, wedding portrait time will go quicker than if we never have an engagement session. You’ll feel at ease during your portraits because you’ve already had a practice!

Hopefully this makes you even more excited about your engagement session! Have fun with it, get dressed up, go out to dinner afterwards and enjoy this stage of your life. Wedding planning can be overwhelming but make your engagement session a fun date night.
